Shakti Women’s Aid

Offer support and information to all black minority ethnic women fleeing from domestic abuse

Aims:

To offer support and information to all black minority ethnic women (over 16 years) and their children experiencing and / or fleeing from domestic abuse from their partners / husbands, ex-partners and / or other family members.

Services provided:

We provide practical and emotional support to ethnic minority (BME) women, children, and young people experiencing or fleeing domestic abuse in all its forms. Perpetrators of abuse can be partners, spouses, parents, or wider family. We can provide: access to safe temporary accommodation; a follow up support for women and children who have left refuge or any other temporary accommodation; information on legal rights, welfare benefits, employment, and immigration/ nationality laws.

Our service is completely confidential and all of our staff and student interns are women. We are part of the wider Scottish Women’s Aid network.

We currently have LGBT Charter ‘silver status’ and are working toward ‘gold’, the first Women’s Aid in Scotland to have achieved this. We support BME women who identify as LGBTI, and BME young people under 18 who identify as LGBTI. We recognise that a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or intersex status can be the target of a domestic abuse perpetrator.

Our opening hours are Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. Outwith these hours, the Scottish Women’s Aid Helpline for Domestic Abuse and Forced Marriage can be reached on 0800 027 1234. You can also reach out to us via private Facebook message (Shakti WA Aid) and via the contact form on our website at any time, we will respond during office opening hours.
