Training Update

Bookings for our accessibility training continue at a steady pace towards the end of the year with some good sessions so far. It’s also steady on the e-learning take up. Our most popular tutor-led course is still Accessibility Awareness (Digital Information) although more organisations are requesting that I mix this with parts of our other training (e.g. Accessible Documents or Accessible Social Media) to fully cater to their training needs in as short a time as possible. I get it, you’re all busy!

I also note that a lot more organisations, when choosing tutor-led training rather than our e-learning, are actually requesting that I go to their workplace to deliver it rather than deliver the session on Teams. It’s certainly a swing away from the reliance on video conferencing that followed on from lockdown and I’m quite happy with this. I like a day out.

CPD Accreditation

Our e-learning Accessibility Awareness training is now CPD accredited through the CPD Standards organisation in London. CPD (Continuing Personal Development) accreditation for a training course means that it has been reviewed by an independent body and found to meet high standards, ensuring it is relevant, adheres to specific quality benchmarks, and is up-to-date for professionals to enhance their skills and knowledge. It can also be used by learners as formal recognition of their achievements in a learning portfolio.

This means that not only is this free course a thorough look at accessibility issues and strategies for a wide range of disabilities but now it can also be added to your folio of CPD hours and go on your CV. The course allows 90 minutes to be added to your learning hours and we will send you a certificate on completion.

We are currently working through the rest of our training including the in-person courses to have that CPD accredited too.

Talking of our other courses, we have diversified out from digital accessibility and have recently introduced a session on Inclusive Environments. This roughly 90 minute course was developed by our volunteer Abi who is a recent MSc (Masters) student and covers the issues and accessibility strategies relating to physical environments such as offices and restaurants for people with a wide range of disabilities. This course was delivered in-person by Abi, but the bad news is that Abi is now back in her native Canada after her student visa came to an end. The good news is that, via the wonder that is Microsoft Teams, Abi can still deliver this course from Canada. We just have to figure out the time difference between her and where you are. The extra good news is that this course will be made into an e-learning course so you can benefit from Abi’s excellent teaching without having to get up early or stay up late.

If you are interested in any of our training please contact us on james.duncan@disabilityscot.org.uk to arrange training for yourself or your organisation at a time to suit you. We very rarely do courses at set times and ask people to sign up to attend, Instead we prefer to schedule sessions with an organisation at a mutually acceptable time. Note that all of our training is free. The only charge you might have is if you want in-person training and you are not in Edinburgh. In this case you would make a donation to cover travelling expenses. I stress that I will be prepared to travel and if you’re the organisation that recently emailed us from Arran… I would really like a trip to Arran. I will even split the fuel costs for that one.
