The first recorded opinion that epilepsy was a medical condition was suggested by Greek Physician Hippocrates (460 to 370 BC). Known as the ‘Father of Modern Medicine’ and giving his name to the Hippocratic oath which doctors agree to, Hippocrates stated his belief that epilepsy was a medical condition which started in the brain.
Prior to this his ancient Greek countrymates believed that epilepsy was induced by the Gods and was therefore a ‘sacred disease’.
