One of the most common strategies used by people with hearing impairments while accessing online audio visual content is captions. Captions are a text transcription of speech and sounds in a video. They differ from plain subtitles which you would see translating dialogue in foreign language films in that they may also include a description of what is going on as well as the dialogue. Examples are that if a door bell rings in the video it may say ‘door bell rings’ in the captions.
Dialogue captions can be typed in or automatically generated by most video editing software applications and most social media platforms for videos posted on their sites (See section on speech impairments for further discussion on this)
