Hearing and Sight Care

Meeting the needs of hard-of-hearing, visually impaired, deaf and blind and deafblind people in Caithness and North Sutherland

Aims:

To meet the needs of hard-of-hearing, visually impaired, deaf and blind and deafblind people in Caithness and North Sutherland

Services provided:

  • Two drop-in centres for exchanging NHS hearing aid batteries and routine maintenance
  • Referrals to Social Work Deaf Services and hearing support team, and to audiology at Raigmore Hospital.  Referrals to Sight Action, Inverness for visually impaired clients and the other referrals to Raigmore and Deaf Services
  • Referrals to NHS Deaf Services and Hearing Support Team and to Audiology, Raigmore Hospital, Inverness and Sight Action, Inverness

  • Help and advice on hearing and sight loss, services and equipment available

  • Organises training in lbasic sign language, deaf awareness and communication tactics
  • Rural clinics, quarterly in outreach areas
  • Home visits to housebound, nursing and residential homes, two local hospitals, as well as sheltered housing schemes and day care centres
  • Communication and advocacy services for British Sign Language Users
  • Sale of private hearing aid batteries.

Opening hours:

Wick: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 10.00am – 2.00pm
Thurso: Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 10.00am – 2.00pm.
