Book Trade Charity

A Charity that supports people who have worked in the Book Trade

Services provided:

The Book Trade Charity changes lives – literally overnight. It offers practical, emotional and financial support to anyone who works or has worked in the Book Trade, as well as their dependants.

They provide support and advice at critical times in the following areas:

  • Illness:   The Charity has experience of supporting individuals and families through critical physical and mental illness, and has also supported people looking after partners with Alzheimers and Parkinson’s disease.
  • Life skills:  Whether it’s support with re-training after redundancy, or assistance with an e-learning course, they will people access and regain employment.
  • Information, Advice & Guidance: Through their confidential helpline, they offer impartial support which helps effective decision making.
  • Social Welfare:  Can range from emergency payments for household repairs through to income subsidies for those on low incomes.  They recently purchased an electric scooter for a former publisher, housebound through critical illness.
  • Housing Provision:  The Retreat in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire, is a unique residential facility for people who have worked in book publishing, distribution or sales. Residents can live securely within a community of like-minded people who share a common interest. Since October 2016, and merger with Bookbinders Charitable Society, we also have housing provision at Whetstone, London N20 and particularly welcome applications from young people entering the book trade (first job or long-term paid internships) where affordable accommodation will make the difference to being able to take such a position in the industry
