Sensory friendly ‘Mini Kickers’ sessions launched by Edinburgh Leisure
A first in Scotland, sensory friendly ‘Mini Kickers’ session is being launched by Edinburgh Leisure, providing a safe and suitable environment for children who have a hearing or visual impairment to develop their football skills.
Mini Kickers is already a well-established football coaching session for preschool children aged 3-5 years to develop basic football skills.
Jodi McGinty, Disability Sport and Physical Activity Development Officer said: “Mini Kickers sessions can be loud with participants running in all directions which can often be intimidating for children who find it challenging to see or hear what’s going on around them.
“At Edinburgh Leisure we want to provide opportunities for everyone to get active. Following the success of our deaf friendly swimming lessons at Portobello, we felt this approach could be adopted in other sports. So by creating more sensory friendly sports sessions, more young people will have the opportunity to participate in the best environment for them.”
The sessions will run as a Mini Kicker’s coached activity with a few adaptations to create a supportive environment including lowering coaching ratio’s and adapting the equipment. The coaches will also use proactive approaches to ensure that the sessions are based on the children’s needs.
The sessions are being held on Fridays at Meadowbank from 3.45pm-4.30pm and cost £52.25 for a block booking.
